 SCJ RAISING FUND FOR EDUCATION!

A near capacity crowd of more than 900 friends and supporters filled the Hilton Chicago Grand Ballroom to celebrate the 34th Annual Dinner and Silent Auction for Spanish Coalition for Jobs recently at the Hilton Towers. Attendees gathered to celebrate inspiring success and changing lives in Chicago’s Latino community, hear from outstanding alumna, and bid on more than 150 items with a total value excess of $100,000. Moreover, SCJ students from the Customer Service & Sales and Bilingual Medical Assistant programs volunteered to help with the Silent Auction. As always, a highlight of the event was the annual Leadership Circle Award presentation this year to William C. Foote, Chairman, CEO & President, USG Corporation.

Spanish Coalition for Jobs is an organization that advocates education and training as well as employment in the private and public sectors. Its vision is to inspire Latinos to advance their education that sets them as role models for their children and that promotes positive change in their lives.

The program featured Phil Ponce, WTTW 11 host of Chicago Tonight as master of ceremonies.

IBM Corporation’s Giselle Di Spigno, SCJ Chairman of the Board, opened with comments with a bienviendo, and closed with words of encouragement from the dinner chairperson, Susan D. Whiting, President and CEO of America’s television ratings company, Nielsen Media Research.

A volunteer, representing all those that make the annual silent auction and its organization work, received special recognition, Esther Corpuz, VP Business Development and Community Services, MacNeal Hospital Network. She was cited for her beyond-and-above-the-call activity for the auction. Her extraordinary efforts since establishing and organizing the silent auction has resulted in raising funds as a benefit for Chicago’s only specifically bilingual, CAAHEP certified, medical assistant program.

Mary Gonzalez-Koenig, SCJ President & CEO, applauded those coming together to lend SCJ needed support and doing many tasks to facilitate the SCJ educational mission.

Anna Baez Naif, ’03 was this year’s Keynote Speaker and alumni success story.  In 2002 Ms. Naïf turned to SCJ after a life-changing experience. She came in person to address attendees and share her reasoning that an opportunity to improve her life was afforded by SCJ. It helped her to fulfill her responsibilities to her four children, become a qualified professional and more complete person.
