Winter Graduation 2003 |
BMA Program Accreditation |
SBC Foundation, the philanthropic arm of SBC Communications Inc., is working with SCJ in developing a new Network Database.
Recently, SCJ was awarded the SBC Excelerator Grant. This program seeks to fund projects that will bridge the gap between those who have access to advanced technologies, and those who do not.
The grant program will help SCJ facilitate program management and services through a customized, computerized database network.
SCJ prepares individuals for professional career opportunities in the business and medical field. Every year, thousands of Latinos and other urban residents seek SCJ for access to high quality educational and vocational training programs and meaningful employment opportunities. SCJ relies on the support of, and continues to evolve through its valuable business partnerships. SCJ is looking forward to working with SBC in improving the organization’s technology.
The chairman of the project is Laritza Lopez of Lopez-Martin & Associates. The initiative will implement one database platform, which will allow the various educational departments to share and track information essential to the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the organization.
The SBC Foundation is concerned with connecting the underserved to today’s advanced technologies. This mission defines the future for SCJ, who will now benefit from greater technology and a new network database.

The Bilingual Medical Assistant Program (BMA), a part of the Dr. Daniel Assir DaSilva Allied Health Careers Program, was evaluated and reviewed by the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) in September of 2002. The program was recently granted accreditation on February 22, 2003.
The accreditation of the BMA program is a significant accomplishment for SCJ. The purpose of accreditation is to ensure that the program has a sufficient level of educational quality. This quality is evident in the program's curriculum, the quality of staff and faculty, the types of services offered, and the achievements of its students. When a school applies for accreditation it is volunteering to have the quality of its program compared to national standards that are set by the profession.
Since the initiation of the BMA program, a number of enhancements have been made as the program continues to develop. New equipment has been purchased in order to improve the quality of the student's training, including, CPR equipment, microscopes, supplies for performance of skill sets, and other educational aids.
BMA program graduates are employed in various healthcare settings, including clinics, physicians offices, surgical centers, gynecology clinics, and hospitals. A number of graduates have continued their education after graduation by enrolling in nursing schools, physical therapy programs, and in ultrasound technician training, among others.
Our BMA program is also currently in the process of becoming accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). This will be a very important phase of accreditation, as it will allow all students that have graduated from the BMA program to be eligible to take the national certification exam that would deem them "Certified Medical Assistants."
The SCJ Bilingual Medical Assistant Program is unique, in that students are educated in both Spanish and English terminology. The need for competent, culturally sensitive, and customer service oriented clinicians is very high. BMA graduates are prepared to work with the historically underserved Hispanic community. |

New Beginnings |
SCJ Hosts Free Internet Access Day |
From its beginnings, Spanish Coalition for Jobs has assisted thousands of people in obtaining employment. The lifetime employment services that are offered at SCJ include: pre-employment counseling, job skills assessment, resume writing assistance, employment referrals, informational workshops, job fairs and post-placement follow-up. These unique services are what attract so many to SCJ.
Ana Ortiz was recently placed by SCJ at AT&T Broadband as a Customer Sales and Service Representative in their cable department. Ana arrived in Chicago from the Dominican Republic in January of 2002. Soon after, she took her first trip from her North side home to Spanish Coalition for Jobs, where she knew she would find the type of position she was looking for. Ana attended the Pedro Henriquez Urena National University of the Dominican Republic to study Business Administration and also had previous customer service experience. “I enjoy helping people on the phone with their concerns,” Ana explains.
Veronica Aguinaga, came to SCJ this past March. She was extremely discouraged in her job search because she had been looking for employment since November of 2001, recently after she graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelors degree in Journalism. Veronica couldn’t find a position that fit her interests and abilities. Two weeks after coming to SCJ, Veronica was placed into the position of Field Executive for the Girl Scouts of Chicago. “I would have never found such a great job without SCJ,” she explains, “I am really hoping to stay here for years to come!” Veronica’s job responsibilities include: supervising volunteer leaders, providing individuals with materials about the Girl Scouts of Chicago’s programs, recruiting adult volunteers and girls, and in assisting with specific program changes. Veronica explains, “I really thank the SCJ staff for their supportive services and caring attitude in helping me find such a great opportunity.” |
